Sunday Potpourri No. 4

Today's post comes with the Standard Sunday Disclaimer: "The post title is using the term 'potpourri' in the second of the two senses listed here. The post may also be rather short, although not necessarily so."

How Have I Been, You Ask?

As a word- and language-lover, I'm on record as being skeptical of that "a picture is worth a thousand words" nonsense, but every so often a picture really can save a lot of time. If you find yourself wondering how my life is going at the moment, for instance...

Any questions?

Well, maybe just a bit...

Things That Make Me Sad: Dead Bats Edition

My beloved Kansas City Royals have struggled offensively during their visit to St. Louis, losing 4-0 on Friday and 3-2 yesterday. Today they'll be going against Cardinals starter John Lackey, who got raked for 10 runs in just 4 innings in his most recent start. Of course, with the way the Royals have been slumping at the plate lately, Lackey will probably pitch a shutout...

Today's starter would have been Jason Vargas, but the Royals placed him on the 15-day Disabled List. Joe Blanton will take Jason's spot in the rotation for now, and Chris Young will be moved up to start against the Cardinals today. Chris was brilliant in his last start, shutting the Twins out in Minneapolis on just one hit over six and a third innings in a game the Royals won 2-0. He pitched against the Cardinals in a game at Kauffman Stadium on May 22, limiting the Cardinals to 0 runs on 6 hits in his six innings of work. The Royals won that game 5-0.

"Maybe our Sunday alternate uniforms will bring us some luck."

Stanley Cup Finals Update

While we're on the subject of sports, the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 last night in Tampa Bay. Every game in the five-game series so far has been decided by a single goal, and now the Blackhawks have a chance to win the Stanley Cup on their home ice for the first time in 77 years. Last night's winning goal was scored by Antoine Vermette...
"Je bois votre milkshake, Tampa Bay!"

Why We Can Never Have Nice Things: Kaiju Edition

"Damn it, Rodan, we just got done putting a new roof on that building!"

I absolutely did, yes...

Wild Kingdom Bed & Breakfast Update

I've been trying to catalog all of the different species of birds that have been regular guests. Among the more attractive visitors are a pair of Purple Finches...

"Nice little place you've got there, Shu. I'll be telling all my friends."
I'm glad you like it. You're welcome any time...

"Still got a thing for the red-heads, I see."
Get your mind out of the gutter...

If I Ever Win the Powerball Drawing...

...it would be my intention to give almost all of the money away to Catholic Charities USA and other worthy causes. That's not to say I wouldn't treat myself just a little bit. For instance, I would finally be able to afford to track down and own a car that has haunted my dreams since high school: The Jensen Interceptor III.

A red convertible like this one would be my STRONG preference...

...but I could live with a hardtop coupe if I must.
I'm not a big fan of the notion of a "bucket list," especially since they made an absolutely dreadful movie using that title, but I would really like to own my "dream car," even if only for a short while, before I do the whole et in pulverem reverteris thing...

Until Next Time...

A little over 22 years ago (May 1993, to be exact) one of my favorite bands, Dire Straits, released it's second live album, recorded a year earlier at concerts in France and The Netherlands. On the Night captures the band in fine form on hits spanning their whole career to that point. Sadly, it was to be their final tour (the band broke up shortly after On the Night was released). Today's send-off is a video from the DVD version of the album. It is "Brothers In Arms," a beautiful ballad that showcases Mark Knopfler's complete command of his instrument. It is sad, as ballads often are (I can't listen to this song without tears welling up, in no small part because I'm aware that this is the group's last live hurrah), but it is strangely uplifting as well. Enjoy...
