Déjà Vu All Over Again

Jurassic Ideas

So yeah, the top news story over the weekend was a well-funded premiere featuring a big, scary dinosaur...

"RAWR!"
No, I'm not talking about Jurassic World (which set box office records, by the way). I'm talking about the second Big Event announcing Hillary Clinton's candidacy for president (the first one, a video released on April 12, was swamped by several weeks of unfavorable news breaks and scandals). I'm not sure whether this weekend's Do Over represents Hillary 2.0 or Hillary 3.0, but it hardly matters. There was absolutely nothing new or surprising in the rhetoric she employed on Saturday. Without a trace of irony, Clinton accused the Republican field of "singing the same old song" while she herself apparently intends to base her campaign on one of the hoariest political cliches there is (class envy).

Somehow we're supposed to forget that eight years ago her own party rejected her in favor of the most inexperienced and unaccomplished person ever to become President. On the other hand, there is no evidence that the idiot electorate that did that has learned from its mistake, so...

"If she gets elected, you'll BEG me to eat you."

Welcome Back!

Tonight is the sixth-season premiere of Rizzoli & Isles, the TV incarnation of characters created by novelist Tess Gerritsen (do read those books, by the way). Nice to see you again, ladies...

Angie Harmon AND Sasha Alexander? Be still my heart...

"At your age, that's probably not an expression you should use."
Very funny...

Things That Make Me Happy: Offensive Explosion Edition

After scoring only two runs total in two games over the weekend in St. Louis, my beloved Kansas City Royals found their offense in one of the other parks named for a major brewing company, beating the Milwaukee Brewers 8-5 at Miller Park. Edinson Volquez pitched five solid innings to advance his record to 6-4, 3.10 ERA. The bullpen was solid until the 9th inning, when Wade Davis had to come in after Greg Holland struggled. The Brewers had already scored 3 runs in the inning, and had runners on second and third with no outs, when Davis came in.  Just 10 pitches later, the game was over. Wade's ERA is now 0.32 (he has only allowed a single run in 28 innings so far). The big blow for the Royals was a two-run home run by center fielder Lorenzo Cain in the 5th inning...

"Boom!"
The Milwaukee portion of this odd four-game series concludes tonight, followed by two games at Kauffman Stadium Wednesday and Thursday.

Three-Part Harmony, Wild Kingdom-Style

Things That Make Me Happy: Frozen Justice Edition

The Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup on their home ice last night, defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0. One of the traditions of the sport is to have players from the winning team skate around the rink holding up the trophy, and easily my favorite of all of the photos from last night is this one, featuring 40-year-old defenseman Kimmo Timonen finally realizing his championship dream after 16 seasons in the NHL...

"I'm leaving as a Stanley Cup champion..."
"Admit it...that picture makes you tear up, doesn't it?"
Does not...  *sniff*

Until Next Time...

In the spring of 2014 I was fortunate enough to see my hero Joe Bonamassa three times in the space of a week: At the Omaha Music Hall, at the Orpheum Theatre in Sioux City, and the Civic Center in Des Moines. On that particular tour, Joe played an acoustic set, followed by an intermission and then an electric set. The acoustic set featured several musicians who had been a part of Joe's all-acoustic performance at the Vienna Opera House the year before. I especially enjoyed Joe's version of the Bad Company song "Seagull," and at the Orpheum Theatre show I was so close to Gerry O'Connor that I could have reached out and touched him. There's just something about an Irishman with a fiddle that moves me. Enjoy...
